Understanding Colorectal Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society (ACA), colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the United States, yet it is highly preventable with regular screening. Screening can detect precancerous polyps, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. It can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
Despite the effectiveness of screening, a significant number of people who should be screened are not getting tested. This gap in preventive care allows colorectal cancer to grow and become more dangerous before symptoms appear. The ACA recommends that individuals at average risk start regular screening at age 45. If you are this age or older, talk to you doctor about which type of screening test is best for you.
To reduce the risk of colon cancer, here are some proactive steps you can take:
1. Get Regular Screenings
Start screenings at age 45.
These tests can detect precancerous polyps, which can be removed before they turn into cancer.Follow your doctor's advice.
Depending on your risk factors, your doctor may recommend different types of screening tests.
2. Maintain a Healthy Diet
Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
These foods are high in fiber, which can help reduce the risk of colon cancer.Limit red and processed meats.
High consumption of these meats has been linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.Reduce alcohol intake.
Drinking alcohol in moderation, if at all, can lower your risk.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Focus on a balanced diet and regular exercise.
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week.
4. Avoid Smoking
Quit smoking and seek help if you need it.
Smoking is linked to an increased risk of many cancers, including colorectal cancer.
5. Know Your Family History
Discuss this with your doctor.
If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, you may need to start screening earlier and more frequently.
By incorporating these habits into your lifestyle, you can significantly reduce your risk of colon cancer. Remember, early detection through regular screenings is one of the most effective ways to prevent this disease.
